DOX' TALKS: SUMMER

CRASH COURSE

The Dox Talks Crash Course was a 4-week summer initiative that offers hands-on online Programming and CAD (Computer-Aided Design) courses to students in the Philippines. The summer initiative successfully organized biweekly Zoom workshops, engaging around 25 active students. The ultimate highlight of this Crash Course was that the team was able to expand the opportunity to include students from grades 4-12. And as a result, the summer initiative’s focus on CAD and Programming led to the completion of over 20 unique student projects.

DoxTalks - Women Engineers

The Women’s Engineering Panel was an online event hosted by our team that gave us an opportunity to speak with many talented women in the STEM field, with most of them having 10+ years of experience and currently working for Northrop Grumman. By sharing their stories and asking them questions, they described the various struggles about being a woman trying to strive in a male-dominant field and how they overcame these difficulties and used it to their advantage. With an audience of about 50+, the panel gave eye opening advice and fueled the motivation of the young girls in STEM.

DoxTalks - Philippines

Held over Zoom with 589 total participants, our team organized an online panel about robotics and careers in STEM with a K-12 school located in the Philippines. With the help of our team’s executives, coaches, and mentors, the panel successfully expanded our knowledge to students in grades 7-12 from a country where engineering is not as established. The students were able to ask any questions related to STEM, especially about robotics and how to start their own path in engineering. Despite a 7,200 mile gap between us and the school, we were able to successfully organize and hold our first international event in team history.

Orange County Maker Faire

Our team also had the chance to attend the OC Maker Faire, a convention showcasing invention, creativity, and resourcefulness, held in Costa Mesa on September 10, 2022. We brought 2 of our robots with us, our 2022 bot “Ozzy the Ophthalmologist” and our 2020 bot “Phoebe the Phthisiologist”. During the event, we ran Ozzy through practice matches and placed Phoebe on display at our booth, allowing for the community to see our skills and abilities as a robotics team.

Wings Over Camarillo

This year our team had the opportunity to attend Wings Over Camarillo, an annual air show held from August 21st to the 22nd. At the event, we showcased our 2022 robot “Ozzy the Ophthalmologist” by running practice matches with other teams also attending the event. At the same time, we used Ozzy’s arm subsystem to intake and pass out balls to the children watching , allowing them to shoot them into the high goal.

Children’s Hunger Fund Volunteering

The Children’s Hunger Fund is a private non-profit organization that sends resources to impoverished children and families worldwide. CHF sends food and establishes lifelong connections with these families to offer them support and hope. Over the Summer members of the Robodox got together to help volunteer to package, assemble and distribute “food paks” to establish a strong connection with not only our community but with kids on all parts of the planet. In total 8 hours were spent working, helping the cause. While the Summer break may have concluded we still plan on participating in CHF and other similar events/programs.

Electronics & Pneumatics Workshop

Mr. Khoi, one of 599’s mentors from Northrop Grumman, goes over an introduction to E&P, for those interested to understand what one might come across working in the subteam. In the workshop, various E&P concepts are covered, such as the types of connections and terminations that are seen, as well as the types of components that are used, such as power modules, sensors, and more. An introduction to assembly was also discussed like soldering and fittings. The workshop ended with Mr. Khoi explaining the types of skills that are involved with working in E&P, as well as multiple real-world scenarios where E&P can be applied.

Scouting Workshop

Justin Yeung, one of 599’s mentors and FRC 1678 alumni, teaches how to successfully develop a scouting system that works for a team, by going through the types of platforms teams can use, as well as the pros and cons of each. Then moving on to selecting and gathering data points, and later showcasing the different ways a team can visualize that data. Lastly, he goes over steps and resources teams can use in order to solidify their scouting system.

Kick-off Workshop

Also led by Justin Yeung, he teaches how to set up a successful team for both off-season and build-season, by developing and reinforcing a proper curriculum and training projects. Additionally, he offers other resources and tips to properly teach and prepare the team for the different things that they need to know in order to succeed for the upcoming build season.

Granada Hills Holiday Parade

The 38th Annual 2021 Granada Hills Holiday Parade took place on December 5, 2021 from 1:30-3pm in the Granada Hills community. As a team we participated in the parade as we demonstrated our robotics skills using our 2014 robot, Annie the Anesthesiologist. Our winter wonderland themed float was decorated with artificial snow, Christmas trees, and bows. During the parade we loaded Annie with an exercise ball and demonstrated her shooting skills for the community. Other members displayed the Robodox flag in front of our parade float. Although we experienced some slight complications with the robot along the way, we worked together to solve them which impressed the community as well as the judges. This event also captured the attention of Mr. Khoi, who is now an active mentor on our team.

Summer Workshops

The Robodox is reaching out to our mentors, alumni, and peers in order to teach fellow students in the STEM field about various STEM subjects. Students and their respective teachers are hard at work organizing these workshops, which will be held throughout the summer and will teach varying levels of robotics concepts including design, programming, strategy, CAD, E&P, and physics. Workshops will be both in-person and/or virtual, which would be based on teacher preference and availability.
